Limassol ( English version)

 

 

The old town of Limassol is the heart of the city with its narrow streets radiating out from the old fishing harbour.

The medieval Limassol castle houses the Cyprus Medieval Museum.
The town has grown in recent years and now covers a 15 kilometres coastline lined with hotels and apartment blocks, interspersed with eucalyptus groves and linked by a promenade popular with walkers or joggers.
The city’s inhabitants are renowned for their love of fun so not surprisingly the city’s nightlife is varied. All sorts of taverns, discos and clubs are open all the year round, while beach bars along the coastal walkway add to the choice. Join in the Bacchian excesses at the Wine Festival in September, or have fun at the Carnival with its fancy dress chariot parade and parties in February. Or enjoy a summer concert under the stars in the Greco-Roman theatre of Kourion.

 

Must-see: the medieval castle of Limassol. Castle from the 13th century, ancient Byzantine castle, it is here that Richard the Lionheart, King of England, and Berengaria of Navarre got married. Today it houses the Cyprus medieval museum. / Carob-mill museum, built in 1900 in a time when the walnut of the carob tree was one of the biggest exports in Cyprus. Vasilissis Street/ Museum of municipal popular art, houses collections of popular art of the 19th and 20th century. / Regional archaeological museum of Limassol. It has a very rich collection of antiques from the Neolithic period up until the Roman period.

Events: February: the carnival of Limassol is the most renowned carnival in Cyprus. Over a period of 10 days the carnival has grown and people from all over the world visit Limassol to enjoy the street parade during the days of the Carnival.

March: 10th festival of contemporary dance. Theater Rialto, Limassol/ 13th festival of dance. Theater Rialto, Limassol / / international open marathon, organized by the gymnasium club "Ta Olympia" Limassol will take place around March 20th.
